Etiquette and Guidelines For Practice

etiquetteTo ensure you have a pleasant, rewarding experience at our studio, we ask you to please observe the following guidelines when attending classes at Balanced Life Yoga.

“Namaste” literally means: the divine in me bows to the divine in you.

Every moment we are together—from the street outside, to class, to back outside again—we have the opportunity to respect and appreciate one another.

Here are some wise and gracious etiquette guidelines:

  • Please visit the sign-in desk before class.
  • Signing in for every class is essential, for safety reasons, and so that we can compensate our teachers according to class attendance.
  • Allow yourself some time to sign-in and get ready for class. Arrive 15 minutes early.
  • Wear comfortable, lightweight clothing that is flexible and non-binding, such as shorts, tee-shirts, and stretchy workout wear. (Power yoga is a vigorous practice requiring freedom of movement; be prepared to sweat.)
  • Yoga is best practiced on an empty stomach. Wait about three hours after a large meal, two hours after a light snack.
  • Inform the teacher prior to class if you have any serious health conditions such as neck, back, or joint injuries, recent surgery, high blood pressure, pregnancy, etc.
  • For the comfort of others, please refrain from wearing perfume or cologne.
  • Please turn off cell phones and pagers before entering the studio.
  • Please move your mat and make space for other community members in classes that are busy
  • If you must leave class early, try to rest a few minutes in savasana (corpse pose) at the end of your practice. Leave before the rest of the class begins savasana in order to avoid disrupting their resting time.
  • It is advisable to refrain from drinking water during class. Yoga is a detoxifying process and best practiced on an empty stomach. Please re-hydrate before and after class.
  • Remember the breath is key. If you must breathe in and out of the mouth, are straining for breath or feel you are chasing the breath, you are working to hard. Please take a break in child’s pose or slow down. Your neighbor should not be able hear your breath or any straining.
  • Remember we are all here to connect to ourselves. Please do not engage in conversation during class or be disruptive to other students or the teacher.
  • Please ensure you take all your belongings with you after class including empty water bottles and any garbage.
  • Please place all mats and props away cleanly and safely in their proper storage place.
  • Consider bringing your own mat as it is more hygienic. We have Jade mats for sale in our boutiques.
  • If you tend to sweat, please bring a towel.

Thank you all for your cooperation and continued support of Balanced Life Yoga and the amazing practice of yoga! Happy practice!

Namaste and many blessings,
Balanced Life Yoga
